Germaine A. Hoston-Other Activities

Professional Leadership
Dr. Hoston has served as a member of the Executive Council of the American Political Science Association and an officer of the Association for Asian Studies. the American Advisory Committee of the Japan Foundation, and the Institute for EastWest Studies, New York and Prague, where she stressed the integral character of Atlantic and Pacific security concerns in the new world order. She is Chair of the Competing Modernities in Twentieth-Century Japan Conference Series, a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and as founding Director of the Center for Democratization and Economic Development (1993-1999) facilitated international scholarly exchange among scholars in the United States, Eastern and Western Europe, and the Pacific Rim.

Other Activities
Dr. Hoston has long been an active leader in non-profit organizations seeking to promote social justice. She has served as Co-Chair of the Peace and Justice Commission of the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland, and as Co-Chair of the Companion Diocese Committee there. As Chair of the Cross+Roads Programs Board in the same diocese, she oversaw the granting of funds to support outreach programs to serve the poor and homeless, as well as the Church itself. Germaine has also served on the boards of several academic and community organizations, including Clergy and Laity Concerned, the Protestant Episcopal Seminary in Virginia, the Asia Society, the Standing Commission on Human Affairs of the national Episcopal Church of the United States, and Clergy and Laity Concerned. She writes and accepts a limited number of public speaking engagements, where she addresses current trends in Asian politics. In her work in the Wake Up . . . Live the Life You Love series and events, Germaine offers insights on how key ideas currents in East Asian thought can contribute to the spiritual side of an abundance-based living and principle-centered leadership. Finally, trained in the arts of music and dance, Germaine is a also an avid bronze sculptor.
